resplendent

The piece honours the life of Vida’s brother-in-law who was killed in a rockfall while climbing in August 2012. These small paper pyramids, lit from within, are arranged across the space, following the mapping of the 54 peaks over eleven thousand feet that he climbed in the Canadian Rockies. They began to glow as the light faded at dusk. The piece also memorialized a great uncle, Peter Cunningham, who was killed building a mountain tunnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1916, and is buried in Union Cemetery. Creating a place of respect for those who have lost their lives in the mountains of Alberta – loved for their beauty, but holding danger at their heart.
